In order to prepare our student for the upcoming school year, the following books should be read over the summer break. We will begin the year reviewing these books along with enrichment activities. All students entering the fifth grade must read one of the books with an asterisk. Students should expect to take AR quizzes on these (**) books as soon as the system is available. Students may choose to read at least two of the remaining books on the list.
á Number the Stars by Lois Lowry (for traditional students) **
á Johnny Tremain by Ester Forbes
á The Watsons Go to Birmingham-1963 by Christopher Paul Curtis
á The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis
á Jacob Two-Two Meets the Hooded Fang by Mordecai Richler
á Bud, Not Buddy by Christopher Paul Curtis (for optional students) **
á The Girl Who Loved Caterpillars by Jean Merrill
á Half Magic by Edward Eager
á Little Town on the Prairie by Laura Ingalls Wilder
These books can be found at the public library or purchase at your nearest bookstore.
