What a Terrific Week!
A huge thank you to Dr. John Barker, Executive Director of the MCS
Office of Research, Evaluation, & Assessment for coming to our TCAP
Saturday event on Sat., April 5th to work with our parents on
helping their children do their very best on TCAP.
A huge thank you at all of the parents who came out to participate in this
workshop and who brought their children. We had 35 parents in attendance and
47 students worked with teachers in small groups on test taking skills.
It was a very successful event. We will have our 2nd TCAP Saturday for this
year with Mr. Buddy Chapman, Executive Director of Crime Stoppers on Sat.,
April 12th. It is not too late to sign up, but let Ms. Bennett know quickly so that
we can plan lunch accordingly. You can reach her at 416-8582. If you leave a message,
let her know how many people in your family will be staying for lunch from 11-12.

Mr. Phil Darius Wallace presented his "From the Heart of a King" theatrical performance on
Friday, April 4th that included song, dance, speeches, and poetry.
The students were captivated during the entire performance.

Thank you, Mr. Wilson. We wish you the best in your new position.
DTE faculty gave Mr. Wilson a standing ovation, recognizing
his outstanding performance as Building Engineer of DTE.
Mr. Wilson and family and the DTE faculty/staff attended
a farewell party in his honor.

playing in the NCAA Final Four!

DTE GeoClub received a package of letters from penpals in Turkey,
our Memphis In May honored country.


New Ballet Ensemble comes to DTE!


Science Fair Winners!
Downtown Elem. teachers and students received awards at the
Memphis/Shelby County Elementary Science Fair ceremony
Mrs. Freda Feaster's class project, "Spongebob Science, "
received TWO awards, a trophy
for 1st place AND a plaque from Buckeye Technologies, Inc.
Buckeye will also sponsor a pizza party for her class!
Sixth grade S. Riding received a 2nd place trophy for his
individual project on rocketry.
Congratulations!!


World Math Day!
Mrs. Smith-Taylor's 3rd grade class registered to participate in
World Math Day. They practiced on computers in their classroom,
then competed with other students around the US and Canada
during their computer lab time on March 5...World Math Day!


We collected over 2,500 non-perishable food
items during the Kids Kan! Food Drive, &
the winning class, with 198 items, was
Mrs.Smith-Taylor's 3rd grade class.

Herr Stefan Borst, of Germany and of Autozone, spoke with the DTE GeoClub.
The GeoClub presented Herr Borst with a framed picture of the rotunda art.
Herr Borst presented GeoClub members with packs of Gummy Bears, a German treat.

Firestation #5 visits DTE 2nd graders!

State Capitals Competition!
What a week to compete! DTE students have spent weeks preparing for this year's
State Capitals Competition, supporting our Optional School Social Studies emphasis.
Students study the 50 state capitals and take a written test in their homerooms.
Those students who scored 100% came to the computer lab this week on their
designated grade-level competition day. They competed on-line using
sheppardsoftware.com. Those students who were able to match the 50 capitals
to the correct states in the fastest time were awarded medals. All participants will
receive a certificate at the end-of-year Honors Assembly.

PeaceJam Rally! Seniors from St. Mary's

students and teachers kick-off our PeaceJam,Jr. program.

 

AR and MCS Reads Night
Approximately 50 families participated in Downtown Elem.'s AR and
MCS Reads Family Reading Night on Tuesday, Sept. 25th.
Parents and students read stories, played games, took AR tests,
played MadLibs, and made puppets.

Welcome, Mr. Jorge Hernandez, from Chihuahua, Mexico!
Mr. Hernandez came to DTE to speak with the GeoClub and FLICK students.
Mrs. Trella King arranged for Mr. Hernandez to visit our school and share
multi-media slide shows from Chihuahua. DTE student Trey W. presented Mr. Hernandez
with a framed picture of the rotunda art.


Dr. Jack Maxwell is honored as an "Unsung Hero" by ING. Dr. Maxwell
is one of three teachers in the state of TN, the only MCS teacher, so honored.
Only 100 teachers in the nation were honored with this award.
Dr. Maxwell received a $2,000 check from ING representatives,
Mr. Freer and Mr. Calvin Reid.

In Memoriam
It is with tremendous sadness that we learned of the untimely deaths of
Downtown Elementary students, Carnisha Banks and Karlton Parker,
in a July 4th boating accident. Please keep the families and friends of these
two young people in your thoughts during this painfully sad time.
The administration, faculty, and staff of Downtown Elementary
mourn their loss.

reminded them of seat belt safety, and read Green Eggs and Ham in celebration of

Science Fair Awards!
Downtown Elementary received four awards at the Memphis/Shelby County
Science Fair. 4th grade students Malik J., Ania K., and Chazz R. received
a 4th place trophy. A first place trophy went to Mrs. Heather Davis's kindergarten
class. Special awards went to Mrs. D. Johnson's 3rd grade class by the Memphis
Archaeological and Geological Society. They received a certificate and tickets
to the Mid-America Mineral, Fossil and Jewelry show. Ms. Fredha Feaster's
class received a certificate from the Memphis Organization of Science
Teachers and a $25 Simon gift card.

Congratulations to Mr. Timothy Cain's 2nd grade class!!
Mr. Cain's class brought in the most items for our service project, "Kids Care at Downtown Elementary", initiated by Mrs. Deanna Jeffries. Students brought care items for the residents
of the Atrium Nursing Home Center. Many of these people have no family or relatives
to assist them with their basic needs. Mr. Cain's class earns a
"no uniform day"and will have their class picture in The Commercial Appeal.

Mrs. Michelle McKissack, DTE parent and Mrs. West Tennessee 2007
visited Mrs. Hiblers' 6th graders to talk about careers
and her experiences in the news media.


Totem poles! Beaded necklaces! Vests! Headbands! Third grade students
rotated among the six third grade classes, creating a special project in each!
They celebrated the culmination of a unit of study on Native Americans as well
as Thanksgiving! Wouldn't it be great to be in 3rd grade again?!

Read Across America!
Second grader, Taylor D., points to North Carolina, the setting of the book, Meet Addy, which she read for Read Across America. Students read books that took place in the United States and displayed a description tied to the state. Twenty-six states were represented in the Second Grade’s Read Across America Event. The Fourth Grade’s Read Across America display features the reports from their books about Women in History. Oroma W. read the book, Venus and Serena.

Downtown Elementary Newspaper Club and CLUE students asked questions of a panel of honored guests on Tuesday, Feb. 28th. The guests included Jeff Sanford (President, Center City Commission), Duke Herenton (VP of Willis Ins. of TN), Carlee McCullough, Esq. (candidate for Chancery Court Judge), Craig Dandridge (CFO & VP for Facility Maintenance Experts), Harold Patrick (Real Estate Developer), and Blake Fontenay (Editor for the Commercial Appeal). The program was part of our school's social studies optional mission. Dr. Maxwell and Mrs. Wood organized the Meet the Press program.


Kids Kan!

Downtown Elementary students collected over 2,600 cans of food for the Kids Kan Drive. Once again, DTE students excel in giving to others!

Heart 4 Art/Brotherhood Program~ 5:30-7:30 p.m., February 13, 2006!
Oh, What a Night!
Parents, teachers, students, community members, art teachers....all gathered for a celebration of Heart 4 Art and Heroes in Harmony on Monday evening. The evening began in the rotunda as visitors were greeted with harpist Amy Vails and walls covered with paper hearts representing donations to the Heart 4 Art program. Heart 4 Art Chair Michelle McKissack and PIE Chair Elizabeth Ivy presented plaques to those who have contributed so much to the Heart 4 Art program at Downtown Elementary, including Mr. Jack Belz, Downtown Rotary, Mary Beth Uselton, Christopher Farris and more. The multi-purpose room stage was beautifully decorated by Brotherhood Program chair Mrs. Theresa Dillihunt and her committee. The evening continued with a spaghetti supper, chorus performance and outstanding student participation in the Heroes for Harmony program.

2nd grade grandparent -Mrs. Shirley Brown's name was drawn. Faculty members cheered
as Mrs. Brown received her certificate and flowers!

The Third Family Math/Science/Technology Night is a Huge Success!

Over 400 people attended Downtown Elementary's 3rd Family Math/Science/Technology Night on November 10, 2005. Family oriented activities in the cafeteria, computer lab and science lab emphasized science, math, technology or a combination of the three.
