Edward Crump

Politician and Businessman
(1876-1954)

Edward Crump, "The Boss," was once the most powerful man in Memphis, Tennessee. He was born on a farm near Holly Springs in Marshall County, Mississippi. As a young man, he attended school to learn how to be a farmer.

In 1892, he moved to Tennessee. When he moved to Memphis, his first job was that of a bookkeeper. This may not seem to be an important job, but he had to start somewhere. He later got into banking and real estate.

Edward Crump became a board member of Public Works in 1905. His most important public position and job was mayor. He was elected as the Mayor of Memphis from 1910-1916 and was elected once again in 1939. Other accomplishments include:

  • Fire/Police Commissioner — 1907
  • County Treasurer of Shelby County — 1917-1953
  • Democrat Representative to the 72nd & 73rd Congress — 1931-1935

In Memphis, Tennessee, on October 16, 1954 Edward Crump died. Today, you can see his tombstone in the historic Elmwood Cemetery. Even though "The Boss" is dead, his many contributions to Memphis still live on.
