The birth of Willie W. Herenton took place in 1940 in Memphis, Tennessee. He attended Booker T. Washington High School. He earned a B. A. from Le Moyne-Owen College in Memphis, a M. A. from the University of Memphis, and a Ph. D. from Illinois State. Dr. Herenton served first as a teacher and then as a principal. Finally, he became the Superintendent of Memphis City Schools. After leaving the school system, Dr. Herenton ran for public office. In 1991, Dr. Herenton was elected as Mayor of Memphis and thus becoming the first African American to be elected to this position. As the city’s chief executive officer, he submits the annual budget for the city to the City Council. He was also instrumental in getting together the $250 million for the FEDEX Forum. In addition, he has control over hundreds of city workers. Willie W. Herenton made history by being the first person to be elected as mayor four consecutive terms. During these terms, he has worked continuously to restore the Memphis Downtown area. |
