Julia A. B. Hooks

Performing Artist and Educator
(1852-1942)

Julia A. B. Hooks became one of the most prominent musicians of color in Memphis, Tennessee. She was born in 1852 in Kentucky. Her musical talent was recognized at an early age. Julia attended Bera College for musical training. She played piano and performed with Mrs. Josiah T. Settle, Sr. who was best known for her beautiful soprano voice.

Julia served as a principal at Lauderdale Elementary School. She taught many students who all recited at Zion Hall. She also controlled a private kindergarten and an elementary school. Around 1907, a Juvenile Detention Home was built next to where Julia and her husband, Charles, lived. They became supervisors. Unfortunately, Charles was killed by one of the detainees.

Julia had two sons, Henry and Robert, who followed their parent’s example. Both Henry and Robert became expert photographers. Julia died at age ninety. A few weeks before her death, Julia was still playing the piano.
