Careers on Wheels

Students participated in a Careers on Wheels Day at Dunbar Elementary.  The day was aimed at students in grades Pre-K - 2.  Students were allowed the opportunity to explore a variety of jobs that involve cars, trucks, horses, motorcycles, and dogs.  Students explored careers involving a limousine, a police horse, a UPS truck, a taxi care driver, a tow truck, and various other careers.   

TCAP Celebration:  Day 5 Pep Rally

Students were pumped up on Friday, April 11, 2008 when they attended a TCAP Pep Rally.  Students proudly displayed their class banners for all to see during Role Call.  The Drum Squad and Pom Poms showed their talents to the students to energize the group.  Students shouted for all of Memphis to hear that Dunbar will shine on the TCAP test.  The pep rally was concluded with dancing and singing the DCAP Rap.

TCAP Celebration:  Day 4 Talent Show

Participants eagerly awaited the day where they were allowed to show off in the dCAP Talent Show.  Students worked together to create their own raps and dances about the TCAP.  Students rapped about how Dunbar Elementary will meet the goal of 86/89 and how the students will come to school prepared for the TCAP.  The Pre-K students concluded the show with a performance of Dunbar's very own DCAP rap.  The entire student body joined in the rap and dance.  What an amazing way to pump the students up to show off on the TCAP test!!!

 

TCAP Celebration:  Day 3 Athletic Day

Students showed off their knowledge while participating in field day activities.  Students in grades 2-5 were given a group of TCAP questions as tickets to participate in activities.  Students correctly answered the questions and were given the opportunity to play a game.  Games included the Sack Race, Frisbee Throw, Balloon Race, Wheelbarrow Relay, Backball Relay, Basketball, 50-Yard Dash, Hula Hoop Relay, Forehead Relay, and the Three-Legged Relay.  Students were excited and engaged in the various activities, making the day a success!

TCAP Celebration:  Day 2 Knowledge Bowl

To continue our celebration of TCAP, students participated in Dunbar's first Knowledge Bowl.  Representatives were chosen from grades 2-5 to stand up and show out at the Bowl.  All participants did a marvelous job in representing their grade levels.  The audience showed their encouragement to fellow classmates through snaps and applause. 
Congratulations to Mrs. Rodgers 2nd Grade Class, Ms. Legette's 3rd Grade Class, Mrs. Sewell's 4th Grade Class, and Ms. Fredericks' 5th Grade Class for winning the Knowledge Bowl for their grade level.

TCAP Celebration:  Day 1 Motivational Day

TCAP is quickly approaching and students are preparing themselves daily for the upcoming tests.  We are celebrating our students' hard work by engaging students in daily activities to test their skills and pump them up for the test.  Students are left in the dark until 1:30 P.M. as to the daily activity.  The activities take place from 2:00 - 2:45 P.M. daily. 

Monday was Motivational Day where students were encouraged to create banners and signs to be used for an upcoming activity this week.  Stay tuned for daily updates on our activities!

Mr. and Ms. Dunbar

In an effort to raise money for the school, Dunbar held its first Mr. and Ms. Dunbar Pageant.  Students raised money to enter the pageant.  The students who raised the most money in grades K-5 were crowned King and Queen.  The students in Pre-K who raised the most money were also crowned as King and Queen.  Students were dressed extravagantly for the occasion.  The pageant was a huge success!

Smuckers' Store Unveiled

Our Smuckers Adopters have gone above and beyond by providing a Smuckers' Store.  Students are encouraged to read and take tests on Accelerated Reader books.  Students tally points earned and head out to "shop" at the Smuckers' Store.

 

Fifth Grade Students Glimpse the Working World

The fifth grade students visited Exchange City to practice real-world skills.  Students worked jobs, received weekly pay, wrote checks, and balanced their checkbooks.  The day was a success!

Successful Fund Raiser!

Students participated in a fund raiser to see who could sell the most candy bars.  The winners were rewarded with a limo ride downtown to dine at TGIFriday's.  The students demonstrated excellence in their manners and behavior while dining out on the town.

Former Student Returns to Give Back to Orange Mound Community

Former student of Dunbar Elementary, Dewayne Robertson, returns annually to give back to the community of Orange Mound.  Dewayne Robertson, a defensive tackler for the New York Jets, filled a Kroger truck with holiday boxes to distribute to the community.  Community members lined up down Park Avenue to receive a holiday box filled with food for the holiday season.  He also distributed gift cards for Krogers after the boxes had been distributed.  Mr. Robertson took the time to speak briefly with the 5th grade students of Dunbar Elementary and passed out gift cards to some students.

Santa Claus is Coming to Town.....

Santa Claus made an appearance at Dunbar Elementary to pose with students for a school fundraiser. 

Spelling Bee!

Students in the fourth and fifth grades participated in a spelling bee on December 18, 2007.  Four representatives from each classroom participated in the event.  Congratulations to Demeria, our first place winner, Sidney, our second place winner, and Calvin, our third place winner.  Demeria will move on to compete against students from various schools as a part of the Scripts National Spelling Bee after the New Year. 

H is for Hats!

Pre-K students at Dunbar Elementary celebrated the letter 'h' with a hat party.  Students wore their favorite crazy hats to school for the day.  Students ate hot dogs, Hershey bars, and hot chips to conclude the day.

 

Feeling Peachy

Students in Dunbar's Book Club celebrated the holidays with a Peach Party to celebrate the book James and the Giant Peach.  Students enjoyed peach pie, peach ice cream, Honey and Bunches of Oats with Peaches, peach candy, and peach soda.  The discussion for the day focused on words that contained or related to the word 'peach'.  The meeting was concluded with a book exchange where each member received a book for pleasure reading over the Holiday break.

 

Striving for Excellence!

Students are making the grade when it comes to Stanford Math.  Students attend the Stanford Math program daily for 30 minutes to help improve math scores.  Stanford Math is a computer based program that allows students to focus on individualized math skills.  Students participate in math races, as well as receive individualized instruction and practice exercises.

Red Ribbon Week Celebration

Dunbar Elementary celebrated Red Ribbon Week, October 22- 26, 2007, through participating in a variety of activities to promote drug awareness.  Students and teachers wore crazy socks to “Sock it to Drugs” and wore their shirts backwards to “Turn our Backs on Drugs”. As a finale to the week, students released red balloons to let the City of Memphis know that Dunbar says, “No to drugs”. 

 

A Visit from Mr. Cool

Mr. Cool visits Dunbar Elementary on October, 26, 2007 to engage students in Science activities.  Mr. Cool conducts science experiments using volunteers from the audience, including both students and teachers.  After conducting the experiments, he explains the experiment to the students, as well as the materials used in the experiments. 

 

 

P is for Pajamas!

Kindergarten students celebrated the letter 'P' by wearing their pajamas to school. 

Book-or-Treat

Students at Dunbar Elementary participated in “Book or Treat” in celebration of Halloween, in collaboration with  Reading is Fundamental .  Students dressed up as their favorite book character or as their future profession.  Students were able to parade through the halls, displaying their costumes, on the way to choose a new book to read. 

 

 

Let the Judging Begin...

Students were in the Halloween spirit when the school participated in a pumpkin decorating contest.  Each classroom decorated a pumpkin and placed them on display to be judged.  Congratulations to Ms. Willis’ 4th grade class for winning 1st place.  Second place was awarded to Ms. Macklin’s 1st grade class and 3rd place was awarded to Ms. Phelix’s 5th grade class.  Congratulations were offered to all participants!

 

 

We are the Champions!

Students at Dunbar Elementary who turned in 100% of their homework for the six weeks received a coupon for McDonald’s and were also recognized at the Honor’s Program.  The highlight was a grand prize give-away, where all homework champions’ names were put in a pool and five grand prize winners were selected! 

 

 

The Race is on...

Students in the 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades participated in voting, using actual voting machines, for student council members.  Representatives from each class campaigned for the positions of President, Vice-President, Secretary, Assistant Secretary, and Treasurer.  Congratulations to Deandrea, Nicholas, Demeria, Marcia, and Asia for attaining roles on Dunbar Elementary's Student Council.

 

The Teachers are Learning Too!

The teachers and principal attended a Saturdayworkshop as a part of the Memphis Literacy Academy.  The academy normally takes place on Tuesday evenings, but the teachers gathered together to participate in a collaborative activity for the morning.  Teachers participated in hands-on activities that involved reading. 

Teachers also worked on differentiated instruction in a presentation made by our very own Mrs. Dickerson and Ms. Clements. 

Farm Education Day

The 5th grade students attended Farm Education Day at the Agricenter.  Students studied agriculture through visiting various booths set up for the day.

 

Displaying our Data!!

Dunbar's stepping it up this year!  We're on the upward move and are not afraid to display it in our halls. 

Second 6-Weeks Honor's Program

Dunbar saluted our Principal's List, Honor Roll, Perfect Attendance, Citizenship, and Homework Champions at the Second 6-Weeks Honor Program.  Students received trophies, medals, coupons, and various other prizes to celebrate the occasion.

Dunbar's Getting a New Look!

Let the renovations begin!  The front side of Dunbar Elementary is receiving a make-over, new windows!  The work has begun and will continue until the make-over is complete.  Check back for updates on the progress.
