Dunbar Elementary Adopters 2007 - 2008

In 1979, Memphis City Schools established the Adopt-A-School Partnership Program for the purpose of bringing community and business partners together to help prepare our students for successful futures.  Today there are more than 600 groups serving as adopters in Memphis.  Dunbar Elementary has been blessed to have six adopters for the 2007 - 2008 school year. 

 

J.M. Smucker's became an adopter of Dunbar Elementary on September 8, 1987.  Smuckers has donated school supplies, provided meals for Teacher's Appreciation Day, attended school activities, participated in the Christmas Angel Tree program, sponsored ice cream socials, and set up the "Smucker's Incentive Store". 

Church's Chicken became affiliated with Dunbar Elementary on September 8, 1987.  Church's Chicken has donated food coupons to students, as well as provided meals for Principal List Students.  They have also provided meals for staff members at the beginning of the school year.

Corky’s BBQ joined the Dunbar family on October 12, 2001.  Corky's has donated school supplies, attended many activities, participated in the Christmas Angel Tree program, provided meals for parents and teacher, judged essay contests, and read to students. 

Lambert Church of God in Christ joined Dunbar as an adopter on November 27, 2007.  Senior Pastor Elder Charles Moore and church members have provided Dunbar with school supplies this year.  The church has been in existence for over 40 years.  LCOGIC has been in the Orange Mound community for 25 years.

M.J. Edwards Funeral Home joined the Dunbar family on November 27, 2007.  The funeral home has been in existence since 1980.  It is located in Orange Mound.  It was established by Mr. Monroe James Edwards.  This year they purchases red balloons to release on Drug-Free Day, a Christmas tree, and provided popcorn and punch for the Compliment Parties.

Dundee's Air Sclusive joined Dunbar on November 27, 2007.  Founder and owner, Mr. Terrance Jackson (Dundee) has been an artist for 17 years.  He was commissioned to create art for Hollywood greats, such as Russel Simmons and Divica Foxx.  He has created beautiful art works throughout Dunbar Elementary School.

 

 

Adopters Galore!!!

Dunbar Elementary celebrated four additions to the Adopters Program on November 27, 2007.  Lambert Church of God in Christ, M.J. Edwards Funeral Home, N.J. Ford Funeral Home, and Dundee’s Air Sclusive met with the Dunbar family to celebrate the occasion and to sign certificates of partnership.  A reception followed to allow the new adopters a chance to mingle with the faculty and students. 

 

 

 

Dunbar Elementary and Smuckers Celebrate Twenty Sweet Years

 

On Friday, September 7, Dunbar Elementary honored the J. M. Smuckers Company for

twenty years of dutiful service as their school adopter.  Joining Mrs. Lori Phillips, the

present principal of Dunbar Elementary, in the celebration were former Dunbar principals

Mr. Maurice Champion, Ms. Kathy Joyner, Mr. Robert Padgett, Mrs. Dora Purdy, and

Mrs. Margaret Wilburn.  In addition to the former principals, Memphis City Schools

Superintendent Dan Ward, Ms. Miska Bibbs, Coordinator of the Memphis City Schools

Adopt-A- School Program, parents, and a host of other notable guests were present.  

 

Students paid tribute through poetry, song, dance, and other creative

expressions to Smuckers employees for the committed relationship established with

Dunbar on September 7, 1987.  Mrs. Purdy shared reflections of the early days of the

partnership formation, which began under her administration.  Heartfelt expressions of

appreciation was submitted by Dunbar’s Parent Teacher Organization President, Mrs.

Joyce Coleman, for Smuckers unwavering support during the twenty years of adoption

 

After a resounding affirmation to continue to support Dunbar by Ms. Angela Soldan,

Human Resources Manager at Smuckers, Superintendent Ward made a proclamation

to make September 7, 2007 “J. M. Smuckers Day” in Memphis City Schools.

A reception was held after the program in the Dunbar Elementary library.
