This program for students (Grades 6-12) who are interested in careers in science but don’t quite know where to start. They get to become technicians in a lab and gain the skills that will allow them to become the next CSI investigator,  biofuels entrepreneur or any one of a number of scientific careers in between. The technicians will produce PowerPoint presentations on their experiences in the program.

Exercises and activities for maintaining an open and safe environment and fostering youth development will be patterned after those from the American Chemical Society. After doing your homework, the day will start with a “staff meeting” with each group submitting their status report on their project from the week before. A lot of what we are able to accomplish will depend upon the age ranges of the program participants. Skills will be assessed and the activities will be structured accordingly. Everyone will be able to actively participate in the program, regardless of age.

                     Mission

The program mission is to expose the students to the various careers in biotechnology through hands-on activities, guest speakers and field trips.

Students will get an overview of several occupations in science, such as forensics, petrochemistry, biofuel production, plant tissue culture and others in a very hands-on way.
The pre-apprentices leaving this program will be qualified to enter the forensics sub cluster courses, biomedical research applications sub cluster courses, industrial chemistry course or any of a number of other courses geared to training individuals for careers in science and industry.
By the end of the apprenticeship portion of this program, the students will be qualified for internships and / or job shadowing in several scientific careers.

Students will gain working knowledge of laboratory safety, standard operating procedures (SOP), and will be able to operate most of the instruments currently used in the scientific community – safely and proficiently.

Work in one of the world’s only high
        school industrial chemistry labs

The IC-I coursework is designed to introduce

industrial chemistry, chemical manufacturing, and

production. Students will be able to observe, use, and

explain the applications  of the chemical industry.

Laboratory safety, basic lab techniques, statistics,

and a variety of apparatus are applied extensively.

Theory is offered in the principles of chemistry as

they relate to the lab exercises.

The IC-II coursework is a continuation of IC-I

and involves further investigations in analytical and

organic chemistry. Students are involved in work

environments similar to those of the chemical Indus

try. In addition to working hands-on,  performing lab

experiments, and real-world environmental research

dealing  with public health issues, (Nonconnah,

Cane,  and Cypress  Creek), students receive one math

credit and one science  credit for this two year

program of study!
