My goals for the year are to instill in each student a love
for reading, recognizing that there are different types of literature, assisting
each student in locating information, incorporating technology into library
lessons, and helping them to build on what they already know.
The main objectives in kindergarten are:
to create an atmosphere through which the students will regard the library
as a warm, inviting, friendly, and interesting place
to visit.
to help the students develop listening and discussion skills.
to teach the students the proper care of books.
to help the students begin to develop an appreciation of literature.
to introduce, review, and reinforce library terms and concepts.
The main objectives in first grade are:
to begin the process that will lead to independent use of the library.
to help the students master checkout procedures.
to help the students understand the arrangement of materials.
to build on the students knowledge and understanding of library and book terms
and concepts.
to introduce genres of literature and nonfiction to help the students begin
to develop their own individual interest areas.
The main objectives in second grade are:
to build a solid background of information regarding terms and concepts as a
prerequisite to the formal teaching of information and retrieval skills.
to work on alphabetizing skills.
to introduce the arrangement of fiction and nonfiction.
to introduce special areas of literature.The main objectives in third grade
are:
to have students demonstrate mastery of the terms, concepts, and skills introduced,
reviewed, and reinforced in kindergarten through second grade.
The main objectives in third grade are:
to continue to introduce parts of the book.
to help students alphabetize to the third letter.
to work on story elements and the writing process.
to introduce the automated card catalog.
to introduce and teach encyclopedia skills.
to introduce different genres to further develop students interest areas.
The main objectives in fourth grade are:
to correlate library skills closely with the classroom academic curriculum.
to continue to introduce and reinforce parts of the book.
to continue working on story elements and the writing process.
to reinforce the use of periodicals as reference tools.
to continue to teach students to use the automated card catalog.
to introduce and reinforce individual reference tools: author books, biographical
dictionaries, atlases, and almanacs.
to work on reference and study skills..
to continue to review and reinforce encyclopedia skills.
to review and reinforce the Dewey Decimal Classification System.
to continue to introduce the different genres to continue to develop students
interest areas.
The main objectives in fifth grade are:
to correlate library skills closely with the classroom academic curriculum,
to continue story elements and the writing process.
to continue with reference and study skills.
to continue with teaching students to use the automated card catalog..
to reinforce knowledge of the Dewey Decimal System of Classification.
to introduce the purpose of the vertical file.
to introduce students to the Internet as a reference tool.
to continue to introduce various genres to continue to develop students
interest areas.
