A Message From Our Principal

Ms. Barbara A. Buford

Guthrie Elementary School opened in the fall of 1915 and was named for Judge Floyd Malone Guthrie.  The school has gone through several renovations and additions. The current building opened in 2000.   The school has had several different grade structures throughout its history; but currently has a Pre-K through 5th grade structure with an enrollment of approximately 360 students. Guthrie has a fully equipped computer lab, a state of the arts library, an art room, a music suite and a huge multipurpose room.  Every classroom has internet access.

Guthrie is a Title I (NCLB) school which implements the Responsive Classroom Approach (the teaching of needed social skills) to teaching and learning.  We assess and address individual student needs through the use of TCAP score Analysis, Formative Assessment, DIBELS and Voyager Testing, and other teacher made assessment tools.  We have a low student/teacher ratio, instructional assistants, a student guidance program and an in-school suspension program.

Parent involvement is expected and encouraged.  A group of our parents are in the process of organizing an official PTA/PTO.  Our parents are kept informed through various written notifications from the teachers as well as the administration.  Our newsletter, the Guthrie Stinger, is sent bi-monthly to all parents.  In addition, a designated Parent Resource Center is available to all parents.

We have several supportive adopters:  Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), McDonald’s, Union Grove M. B. Church, Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity (Memphis Alumni Chapter), and Doubletree Hotel (Downtown).  These adopters assist our school by donating uniforms, school supplies, back packs, incentives such as pizzas, popcorn, and other items. Every year during Thanksgiving, EEOC provides food for at least fifteen of our needy families.  In December, EEOC does an Angel Tree Project with at least twenty of our students where they shower them with many gifts.

At Guthrie, We truly do believe that every child can learn given the right opportunities and that

Every child. Every day is College bound.
