Dr. Benjamin L. Hooks Job Corps Academy

Library Media Center

Ethel "Maria" Morlan,

Library Media Specialist

I was born and reared in Memphis, TN. I graduated from Westwood High School. Upon graduating from high school, my father gave my 5 sisters and myself an option to either go to college or join the military. I, alone with my two older sisters joined the United States Navy and served 11 years.

Upon being honorably discharged from the Navy, I earned a B.S.Ed and M.S.Ed with a concentration in School Library from the University of Memphis. I worked as the Dean’s Assistant in the College of Education from 2001-2003 and the Graduate School Advisor in the College of Education from 2003-2004.

My first Library Media Specialist position was with Cherokee Elementary School where I was nominated by my peers as the Educator of the Month for the month of October 2005, and most Distinguished Educator for the month of January 2006.

In January 2007, I was appointed by Principal Garnita Goodman of Dr. Benjamin L. Hooks Job Corps Academy, to create a functioning library for the academy. During the process, the first Library Club (LC) was established in August of this year with 11 students participating. Today the club consists of over 40 high school students.

My passion is literacy. I am currently creating a children’s library within the high school library to service our student’s children.

Mission Statement

The library’s mission is to strengthen student learning, serve as a resource for the entire school community, enhance the school curriculum at all levels, and encourage information literacy among users. The library media specialist collaborates with classroom teachers to teach and integrate literature and information skills into the curriculum, and partner with classroom teachers on projects that help students use a variety of resources, conduct research, and present their findings.

Finally, reading is one of the most important skills a learner will ever develop. It’s the key to understanding every subject in our curriculum! For this reason, it is imperative that the love of reading is instilled in all students.

Poplar Reading

Have you browsed through the library's collection of new fiction and non-fiction titles yet? Nicknamed the "Popular Reading" collection, this collection of best-sellers is located on the shelves next to the circulation desk. Why have best selling fiction and non-fiction works in a high school library? Studies have shown that students who read for pleasure get better grades than students who don't. New titles are rotated into the collection each month- stop by and check one out!
