Mr. Jack Gantos

On Thursday, September 20, 2007, the Library Club members were privileged to meet Mr. Jack Gantos, a world renowned young adult author, in the Central Ballroom in the Fogelman Executive Center & Holiday Inn at the University of Memphis.  

After the event, we enjoyed fine dining at Holiday Inn Restaurant.

Woodland Presbyterian School

In October, the library club was invited to Woodland Presbyterian School; where their students held a coin drive and collected enough change to purchase over 1,000 books from their Scholastic Book Fair and donated the books to Hooks Job Corps Center/Academy Library Club for the new Children’s Library.

Lausanne Collegiate Middle School

Lausanne Collegiate Middle School students collected an additional 2, 000 slightly used and new books for the Children’s Library. On October 26, 2007, upon delivery of the books, the LC held a Thank You Receptions for Lausanne Collegiate School.

Library Club First Scholastic Book Fair!

November 2007

In November, the LC held its first Scholastic Book Fair. Our goal was to sale $500.00 in merchandise.  We exceeded our goal and sold over $800.00. Thanks to the students, faculty and staff of Hooks Job Corps Academy/Center.

Family Read-Pajama Night

The Dr. Benjamin L. Hooks Library Club’ Family Read-Pajama Night was held November 6, 2007, from 6:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. The event was for Hooks students and faculty/staff children, from birth to 12 years. The children were asked to wear pajamas. Additionally, well-known local children’s book author, Alice Faye Duncan-Thompson, was the guest reader. Several library club members dressed up as characters in books and every child attending receive free books, balloons, a Teddy Bear, milk and cookies for attending the Pajama Night.

The LC held a Teddy Bear Drive prior to the Family-Read Pajama Night. We collected over 35 bears and $160.00 in cash to purchase additional bears.
