9th grade, English I:

Use the provided links to answer the following questions:

  • What is rhetoric?
  • What are the rhetorical appeals and what do they mean?
  • How does “speaker/author/writer,” “audience,” and “word/text/message” relate to the three rhetorical appeals?

Use the following link to complete the six part series on rhetorical analysis.

Be prepared to analyze a speech to determine use of the three rhetorical appeals and repetition and parallelism.  You will analyze this speech on the second day of school.  If you do not use the links from above and complete the six part series on rhetorical analysis, it will be evident in your analysis, thus resulting in a poor score.

10th grade, English II:

The Road by Cormac McCarthy (can be found online)

Analytical essay – The Road – Three pages.

This essay will be due the third day of class.  For late papers, I deduct a full letter grade.  Be sure that you have a clear, well-defined thesis that provides focus to your essay.

Cormac McCarthy’s The Road presents a post-apocalyptic view of America and focuses on the classic “journey.”  However, beneath the surface, there appears to be a commentary on human nature in itself.  Identifying rhetorical devices such as diction, tone and symbolism, examine the essence of this commentary.  In other words, how does McCarthy convey this commentary?

“In writing this poem my biggest inspiration was my struggle

what’s real to me and what moves me. I have never had a ‘normal’ life.

I have been talked about plenty and I figured either let it control my destiny or prove them wrong,” Reed said of her inspiration.

“That’s why it’s easy to write, because I’m writing my truth and telling my story.”

Shanterica Reed
