WHAT TO EXPECT ON WRITING COMPETENCY TESTS

Your writing is judged according to its overall effectiveness. The person reading your essay will read your paper carefully and decide how effective it is based upon its organization, well-focused main points, specific development of your ideas, control of sentence structure, punctuation, grammar, word choice, and spelling. The readers are aware that this is really a first draft and that it may contain errors. Reasons for not scoring well on the essay portion of the Official Practice Test include:

does not write an essay; (writes several sentences or just a paragraph)
does not write on the assigned topic or use the topic to establish a main idea
does not follow directions for completing the essay
does not apply basic rules of grammar and punctuation
fails to organize and/or develop ideas
does not include details and examples when specifically asked to give them
does not write complete sentences
spelling and ineffective or inappropriate word choice
TO IMPROVE YOUR SCORE
Write a five part essay which includes an introductory paragraph, three supporting paragraphs and a conclusion paragraph
