Audition Requirements

The school will call to set up an audition if the report card and test scores meet the required criteria. A parent must accompany the student to the audition. The auditions will consist of the following:

Art

  • Interview - A genuine desire to pursue the visual arts as a serious course of study is imperative.
  • Review of student's most recent art work. Bring as much of a variety as possible
  • Student will be asked to draw during the audition. Bring a #2 pencil and sketchbook

Band

  • Prepared piece (music of student's choice)
  • All major scales
  • Sight reading (music of director's choice)
  • Interview with student and parent
  • Written director recommendation at the time of the audition

Broadcasting

  • Completed Broadcast Orientation application
  • Prepared 2 minute audio/visual presentation for taping which includes:
    • Reason you want to take broadcasting
    • Ways you think the course will help you
    • Contribution you think you can make to the success of Overton's Broadcasting Departme

Choir

  • Sing America (My Country ‘Tis of Thee) a cappella (without any kind of accompaniment)
  • Sing a Solo that reveals your very best vocal quality from the following: art songs, American Negro, spirituals, musical theater solos. The solo must be accompanied by a piano or taped accompaniment track with the vocal solo. Any type of Popular music, Gospel music, or the National Anthem is NOT permitted under any circumstances and will result in immediate disqualification.
  • Two letters of recommendation from persons not related to student. If you are currently enrolled in choir at your school, one letter must be from your present choir director. If you are taking voice lessons, one must be from your voice teacher.
  • Interview with parent and student.

Creative Writing

  • An impromptu writing assignment
  • Review of portfolio, which must include:
  • 3 pieces of various types of poetry
  • a short essay
  • an essay on why you wish to be involved in the Creative Writing Program .
  • A letter of recommendation from you present English teacher and one other source.
  • Interview with parent and student

Dance

  • Must have previous and concurrent ballet training
  • Prepared 60 second dance routine (no street dance). Student must provide the musician cassette only
  • Interview with parent and student
  • Three letters of recommendation (at least one from dance teacher)
  • Copy of recent physical indicating student is in good physical condition
  • Must also attend a placement audition to be held in August

Digital Arts and Design (DAD)

  • Interview with student and parent
  • A review of student's most recent art works. Bring your portfolio.
  • During the audition, a skill drawing test will be given. Bring a #2 pencil and a sketchbook.
  • Recommendation from most recent art teacher

Drama

  • Two memorized monologues approximately 1 minute long. These monologues MUST be from a published play. NO POEMS OR SPEECHES. Author and source of monologues must be cited.
  • One prepared song to sing. Song should be from a Broadway musical.Student must provide own accompaniment. CDs or tapes for songs may not have voices or lyrics on them.
  • Brief typed resume of outside activities and interest, including singing and dancing.
  • Prepared dance or movement sequence. Movement may accompany song. Please wear comfortable clothing.
  • Letters of recommendation from current performing arts teacher and one other professional source (not family or friends).
  • Interview with parent and student at the time of the audition.

Orchestra

  • Prepared solo (not orchestra music). Bring copy of music for the director to use.
  • All major scales
  • Sight reading
  • Letter of recommendation from current teacher
  • Interview with student and parent

Piano

  • Two prepared solos of contrasting style (one must be classical) by different composers
  • Sight reading – students will be asked to read music of instructors choice.
  • If student has background in technique i.e., scales, arpeggios, he/she will be asked to demonstrate level of proficiency.
  • Interview with student and parent. Parent must attend.
  • Two letters of recommendation from persons not related to you. If you are currently enrolled in piano at your school, one letter must be from your present piano teacher. If you are taking private lessons, outside of school, you must include a letter from that instructor as well.
