Sheffield High School began operating in 1967 with approximately 650 students’ grades 7-10. Grade 11 was added in 1968 and grade 12 was added in 1969. Sheffield obtained full accreditation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Universities in 1969 and has continued to receive accreditation since that time. In 2003, the enrollment decreased to 878 students in 9-12, because seventh and eight grade students were assigned to the new American Way Middle School. This year, the enrollment is 866 students.
The students of Sheffield High School matriculate in three circular structures which house classrooms, library, a cafeteria, a 2000 seat gymnasium, and a 1, 501 seat auditorium. An elevator and library lift make the structure accessible to the physically challenged. Two detached buildings, and an Army ROTC building and a practice gymnasium, complete the physical structure. The SHS campus consists of football, softball, baseball, and soccer.
In August 2009, Sheffield received a Competitive High School Redesign Grant totaling $1.5 million in increments of $500, 000 for the next three years.
During the summer of 2009 Sheffield High School underwent major construction to parts of the building to accommodate individuals with disabilities. Sheffield High School houses a weight room facility and one of two Athletic Rehabilitation Centers (staffed with certified athletic trainers) purchased by Memphis Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) since 2005-2006 school year.
This year we are changing our culture, transforming the mindset of our students, and preparing to celebrate academic achievement.
