Who We Are

We are so fortunate here  at Snowden to have a strong guidance team, and a Principal who lets us do our job!  We work together to provide continuity of service to our students and parents.  Please feel free to contact us by phone, email or in person!

What We Do

Your school counselors provide services to students, parents, and teachers through a variety of interventions, activities and programs.  We meet with students individually and in small groups, we meet with parents and teachers, and we consult with teachers regularly.  We monitor academic progress, and assist with interventions to give students the opportunity to improve their grades and/or behavior.  We lead classroom guidance lessons each six weeks on topics including:  educational and career goals, study and test taking skills, decisions making, getting along, perosnaly safety, and trasition to the next grade.

.

The guidance team also coordinates programs such as:  Peer Mediation, Kindness Counts, Adopt-a-Friend, Wm. H. Sweet Honors Award (gr, 7-8), 4+ Plan (gr. 8) , Career Fairs, "Coffee with the Counselors" (parents) and a Health Fair.

Parent Tips

Back to School:  Parents are the 1st Key to Student Success!

  • Make sure your child is in school every ;day - on time!
  • Get to know your child's teachers.  Attend Parent-Teacher conferences, Open Houses, etc.  If you cannot attend, try to schedule an appointment to meet another time - or call or email and ask for whatever information you missed.
  • Let the morning set the day's tone:  try to make sure your child gets a  smile, hug, and encouraging word as you send them off to school..  This can make the difference in your child's day!
  • Converse with your child about their day.  Ask questions that require more than a YES or No answer.
  • Oversee daily assignments:  all students need a place to study that is free from distractions.  And even older students need to know that parents are watching to be sure homework is done!  Ask to see their agenda - and - NEVER   ask, "Do you have your homework?" - rather - "Show me your homework"
  • Perhaps the most important thing of all:  make certain your child knows that you and the school are working TOGETHER!

?   How do I get in touch with my child's counselor?

Please refer to the list of contact information above.  Mrs. Funderburk and Mrs. Scruggs have voice mail capabilities on their phones.  Mrs. Horn and Mrs. Gilliam do not( call the main office 416-4621). Parents are welcome to call or email anytime  with a question or concern.  Your message will be addressed and calls returned.  Parents who want to meet with teachers are also encouraged to contact their guidance counselor to arrange a date and time.

.

?     How can I get information about my child's grades?  and find out waht's going on at school?

One of the best informational avenues is the PTA email - they are wonderful about sending emails at least once a week with all sorts of helpful information  about what;'s going on at Snowden.  You do not have to be a PTA member to receive these emails (although we encourage everyone to join the PTA).  Just give us your email address, and we'll send the information to the PTA and you will immediately begin to receive their great notices.

Also, middle school parents:  most teachers use a computer program called TeacherEase.  Again, by submitting your email, you can check your child's grades anytime you want!  Many teachers also post homework and project assignments  - and - you can establish email communication directly with each teacher!s
