Create Your Own Community Project
The following websites may be helpful for this project. Remember, your projects must demonstrate that you have researched your group's "issues." Please ask me for help if you need it. I am happy to help you, but please remember...you cannot wait until the last minute to ask for help!
Group Presentations will start Monday, October 16.
Youth for Human Rights International - This website provides a great description of human rights. If you have time, check out the public service announcement movies that illustrate each of the thirty human rights!!
Voices of Youth - UNICEF - This website provides information on poverty, child slavery, environmental concerns, HIV/AIDS, and other social issues. The nice thing about this site is that it offers ways for you to get involved and actually help make a difference! Check out the SPEAK OUT and TAKE ACTION pages.
Teaching Tolerance - This organization works very hard to "fight hate and promote tolerance." This is a good site to get ideas on how to fight all types of inequality (including: race, religion, gender, social class, and sexuality). Be sure to check out the 10 Ways to Fight Hate page and the Speak Up Against Bigoted Comments page. There are other good pages under the "Do Something" column. Have fun exploring this one!!!
Mix it Up at Lunch is a program that is designed to encourage students to integrate (mix)their cafeteria. Talk to Mr. Falvey or Ms. Spake if you would like to help out with this project at Snowden!
Global Issues - This site is HUGE and it will overwhelm you if you don't know exactly what you are looking for. This site is written for adults, and you can find information on everything from women's rights, racism, and poverty to population growth and immigration.
World Hunger - Visit this site to learn how hunger affects people in the United States and in other countries around the world. Find out what you can do to help on the TAKE ACTION page!!!
The Holocaust (movie project)
The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum (USHMM) web site has a large library that you can search for photographs, music, and artifacts. The student learning site provides an excellent overview of the Holocaust, and they also have an online Holocaust Encyclopedia.
Helpful Sites
Net Trekker is a massive database of research information for students. Net Trekker contains information on Social Studies, Engish, Math, Science, and more!! It only takes a minute to register and set up an account, and then you can access this website from any computer! (This is also a great place to find pictures.)
Atomic Learning gives you access to short lessons on how to use many computer programs. You may want to access the iPhoto lessons and the iMovie lessons for our video project. I will give you the password to this site in class when you you ask for it!
