What does GED stand for?
GED stands for General Education Development, but is also called General Education Diploma or GEDD, General Education Development Diploma.
What is the GED test?
The GED Test is designed to measure the skill and concepts generally associated
with four years of regular high school instruction. The GED Test is a battery
of five tests, which can be administered only through an official GED Testing
Center. The GED Tests provide an opportunity to earn a high school equivalency
diploma in an alternative mode, a credential recognized as a key to educational
and financial awards.
Five sections are: Language Arts –reading, Language Arts-writing, Mathematics,
Science and Social Studies.
What is the cost to take the GED?
To take the Practice Test, have it evaluated, and attend the classes and workshops, there is NO COST. To take the GED Test, there is a $55 fee.
Who can take the GED?
The applicant must be at least 18 years of age and not
have received a high school diploma or high school equivalency certificate.
Individuals who are seventeen (17) may be tested, providing the applicant:
1. presents to the Test Examiner an age waiver signed by the superintendent
of the school system where the applicant resides, and
2. is not presently enrolled in high school, or
3. is currently enrolled in a state approved GED Option Program.
What are the GED classes and workshops?
After your evaluation, you will be given a list of areas for additional instruction.
The classes and workshops at Southwest Career and Technology Center are presented
in a self-paced form of instruction, using the Plato Learning System.
Do I need an ID to take the GED Test?
Yes, you will need one of the following:
1. Valid Tennessee Driver’s License (will accept an Arkansas or Mississippi
Driver’s License).
2. State issued identification card from the Department of Motor Vehicles
3. U.S. Military ID.
No, a birth certificate cannot be used.
GUIDELINES
FOR GED PRACTICE TEST
1. Cannot be enrolled in a regular high school.
2. Must make testing date appointment at the Adult GED office. Call 325-4847
or 325-4848 and speak with Ms. Akeila Harris or Mr. Matt Sharp.
3. Must present identification before receiving a test slot.
4. Must complete Adult Education Registration Form before being assigned a test
slot.
5. Must meet all standard requirements and guidelines of Adult Education.
Note: Students enrolled in Adult Education Classes must meet Guidelines #1,
2, 3, 4, and 5 and have TABE scores (Math and Reading) in the Pre-GED ranges
with teacher recommendations.
Procedure Summary
1. Take the Practice
Test at Messick Career & Technology Center
2. Students must make a score of 500 on all five sections before they can take
the GED test.
3. If a student makes less than 500 points, the section scores will identify
weak areas for study.
4. Setup a class schedule at Southwest Career & Technology Center to address
these areas.
5. To re-take the Practice GED Test, the student will need the recommendation
of the Southwest Career & Technology Center teacher.
6. Students will return to Messick Career & Technology Center to re-take
the GED Practice Test.
7. After passing the GED Practice Test, the student will complete the required
form, pay the fee and receive a test date.
8. The GED testing center is not at Messick Career & Technology Center,
but is located on Airways.
