Dual Language Immersion Optional Program
(Program entry: Kindergarten)
"I chose the Dual Language Immersion Optional Program at Treadwell Elementary for my child because I see bilinguaglism as a necessary skill for my son to become a productive citizen in a 21st century global society. I love the caring, hard-working teachers and staff, the challenging academic rigor, and the focus on multiculturalism. It is a joy to see my 1st grader reading, writing, and speaking fluently in both Spanish and English, as well as relating to peers of various cultural backgrounds." - Jennifer Shiberou, 1st grade parent
"I like this program because it's amazing! It teaches me more, and it's like a family here... And, of course, I love speaking Spanish!"

2nd grade, Native English Speaker
The global economy has made it more important than ever for students to become fluent in a second language; and foreign languages are easier to learn at a young age. Children at Treadwell Elementary School have the unique opportunity to be immersed in a second world language while paired in the classroom with children who are native speakers of that language.

Treadwell Elementary School’s Dual Language Immersion Optional Program offers students an exciting opportunity to acquire bilingual skills and achieve academic success in a culturally diverse school environment. The Treadwell student population is composed of a well-rounded balance of Hispanic, Asian, Caucasian, and African-American students. |
 |
In this program, students are taught in both English and Spanish. The Dual Language Immersion Program at Treadwell uses the 90/10 model in Kindergarten, where up to 90% of the school day is in Spanish and 10% is in English. As the students progress through grade levels, the Spanish gradually decreases and the English increases to 50% by the fourth grade. In this approach, the children acquire the new language naturally – in a similar way they learned their first language. |

This program is unique in that it strives to enroll an equal number of native English speakers and native Spanish speakers, so the two groups of students are paired together throughout the school day, providing both groups with a foreign language immersion experience. In the Dual Language Immersion Program, all students have the opportunity to be both first-language models and second-language learners, which creates an enriching bilingual environment for all students.
|
The goals of a Dual Language Immersion Program are to attain grade level academic achievement, bilingualism, biliteracy, and positive cross-cultural attitudes and behaviors in all students. In addition to offering extensive Spanish to the dual immersion students, Treadwell will offer at least two other world languages, including Latin, to students in upper grades.
