Memphis Citizens Recognize MCS Educators as City’s Best

Dr. Carol Johnson, Leviticus Pointer Named “Memphis’ Most”by Commercial Appeal Readers

Memphis, Tenn. – Superintendent Carol R. Johnson and Vance Middle School Principal Leviticus Pointer earned high praise from thousands of Commercial Appeal readers, as they received top votes in the publication’s "Memphis’ Most" feature section identifying who local citizens view as the best in various categories.

Voted “Most Effective Educator” by readers, Dr. Johnson was lauded for her countless accomplishments since arriving in Memphis in 2003, including moving 128 schools into Good Standing and implementing the district’s
vision statement, "Every Child. Every Day. College Bound."

As Memphis’ “Most Principled Principal,” Pointer is credited with changing the education culture in the Vance Middle School community by spearheading an anti-violence awareness program for 8th grade boys. The impact of the program was measured by the significant decrease in the number of fights during the 180-day school year, including more than 150 consecutive fight-free days.

Other notable mentions include Grahamwood Elementary School, a finalist for “Most Exemplary Elementary School,” and White Station High School, a finalist for “Most Highly Praised High School.”

"Visionaries and Nurturers Committed to Excellence"
